About the foundation
The Fundación Argentina de Esgrima (Argentine Fencing Foundation) was created by Lucas Saucedo with the following objectives in mind:
- Raising funds to promote the practice of this sport, from amateur to high-level competition fencing.
- Offering a comprehensive training in all aspects of the sport, so that Argentine fencers may be provided with all the tools necessary to have a good performance at international competitions.
- Offering lower-class children who have had no access to a comprehensive education the possibility of being integrated into society.
This sport requires stamina, speed and gracefulness and is a great activity for both mind and body. Those who practice fencing become more agile, develop concentration and synchronisation and what is more, strong principles and values like integrity, respect and responsibility.
The Saucedo family
The Saucedo family is traditionally associated with fencing in Argentina and during four generations, it has produced South-American and Pan-American champions as well as sportsmen who have represented our country in World Championships and the Olympic Games.
Raúl Saucedo was the first South-American Champion in the history of the continental sport and qualified for the 1932 Olympic Games finals in Los Angeles.
Guillermo Saucedo (son) is regarded as Argentina’s best fencer ever. Guillermo was the only sportsman who became a Pan-American Champion on two occasions and Argentina’s last Pan-American Champion.
Lucas Saucedo (grandson) was South-American Champion twice, member of the Argentine team in four World Championships, three Pan-American Games and three ODESUR Games; on three occasions he was one of the three sportsmen selected by the Sports Journalist Association to be awarded the Olimpia prize. He also holds an International Fencing Master diploma awarded by the Italian Fencing Association and he is the Director of the fencing halls at the Centro Naval and Universidad Nacional de Quilmes (Quilmes University).
“I have made a life-long commitment to fencing, first as a fencer, then as a master and now through the Fundación Argentina de Esgrima, to give those who cannot afford practicing this sport the chance to know and practice it and represent Argentina in competitions thus fulfilling themselves as sportsmen and human beings.”
